"STAY HERE"

A Film Score and Virtual Gallery by Maggie Robertson

This ambient and experimental SoundCloud album was inspired and created for the short film “Stay Here” by Amelia Mitchell. The film follows Micah, an isolated young man dealing with derealization who becomes infatuated with his coworker, Elaine. Throughout the film, the two engage in a toxic and harmful relationship as Elaine introduces Micah to a dangerous coping mechanism. Through this score, I wanted to portray the vastness of Micah’s isolation and derealization, represented by the hum, a recurring motif in the album. I also wanted to portray the character’s gradual downward spiral through growing musical tension and suspense. As a result of these aims, the music is often uncomfortable and dissonant.

The Minecraft gallery is another crucial aspect of this work, as it makes the piece more interactive and immersive, allowing the viewer to engage with the world of the album through visuals and sound. Ultimately, the Minecraft gallery should replicate the feeling of walking alone late at night in an unfamiliar place. It includes several of my photos that encapsulate this feeling of isolation and anxiety. Furthermore, the text within the gallery are lines from the film and add to the dark and mysterious atmosphere of the environment.
