DESCENDENT
A Poem-centered Audiovisual Experience By Kadence Meredith
Grieving previous versions of yourself is a natural response to life’s changes, but there is a blurred line between self-reflection and being stuck in the past. Composed of monitors, cameras, and headphones, Descendent is a poem-centered audiovisual experience where participants can explore this line by interacting with falling, distorted video memories from my life.
The falling memories represent the passage of life events. When participants emerge in the digital space, they disrupt the flow, signifying the urge to catch and hold onto memories. A silhouette of the participant appears on the screen, presenting the choice to reflect and move forward into the unknown future. When moving, participants are present in the flow of life, can perceive the memories thoughtfully, and can choose to let them go. When still, they disappear and just watch an unchanging loop of memories.
The artist, Kadence Meredith, used TouchDesigner to make the memories reactive and move through time and space. She combined audio, video, and photo editing with node-based programming and an input/output device system to create this installation.
